Most days of the year, it’s important for us all to keep track of what we eat, ensuring that we’ve all had good mix of fruits and veggies; but this time of the year, we consider Valentine’s Day to be an exception!

From the Berkshires to the coast, Massachusetts is chock-full of sweet shops that supply an endless amount of delectable treats for that special someone in your life. Whether you’re scrambling to find a last-minute gift for your Valentine or just want to top off a romantic dinner with an oh-so-delicious truffle (or two …or ten), any of these shops will do the trick. In fact, after going through this list, you might find that you’ve left a little more room for dessert than you thought.
Let’s dig in!
1. Athan’s Bakery in Boston, MA
For anyone seeking old-world style sweets with a Mediterranean flair, Athan’s should be on the shortlist. This Brookline-based shop (with a new location in Brighton) has it all, from handcrafted chocolates to savory baked goods. For the best of both worlds, try the Bolero, a delightful milk chocolate and almond mousse layered in between genoise sponge cake. Last-minute gift baskets are available in both stores.
2. Richardson’s Candy Kitchen in Deerfield, MA
A New England staple, Richardson’s Candy Kitchen in Deerfield offers a large selection of fine chocolates, always made from scratch with the founder’s original recipe. Pick up a Valentine’s Day assortment early enough and you just might get a glimpse of the kitchen staff cooking up the next batch. Specialty orders for chocolate covered strawberries are only available for store pick-up by phone order at 413-772-0443.

3. Hebert Candies in Shrewsbury, MA
In Shrewsbury, Valentine’s Day is never complete without a trip to Hebert Candy Mansion for a rich treat. Since 1917, the folks at Hebert have been perfecting their craft and producing premium chocolates enjoyed all over New England. Here’s a look at their Valentine’s Day Collection. And if those don’t tickle your fancy, there’s always fudge, premium chocolate bars and plenty of other options.

4. Sonny’s Sweet Sensations in Greater Boston
Sonny’s Sweet Sensations brings something completely new (and delicious!) to the table with Oreo and Pumpkin Pie Truffles. Freshly made with all-natural ingredients, these local favorites fly off the shelves at any of these partner locations: Needham Center Fine Wines, Volante Farms, and Fells Market; those interested can also order over the phone at 617-605-5638.
5. Chatham Candy Manor in Chatham, MA
Founded in 1955, this family-owned shop is open year round and prepared for the Valentine’s Day rush. If Fluffernutter Fudge and Hot Fudge Sundae Truffles are your idea of decadence, be sure to order an assortment for your date! Hand-dipped chocolates, another specialty from Chatham Candy Manor, come in eight different varieties, including by special request.

6. Chocolate Therapy in Dedham, MA
If you made meal reservations in the area south of Boston and dark chocolate is your thing, find time to squeeze in a Chocolate Therapy run before dinner. Dark chocolate is the name of the game at Chocolate Therapy, where signature creations include flavors like Strawberry Balsamic, Earl Greyer, and Sweet Potato Truffles. If you like to get a little creative, take a peek at the custom design section, which can put your favorite logo on something tasty.

7. Winfrey’s Fudge & Chocolates in North of Boston
Fudge fan? If you haven’t already done so, check out Winfrey’s, a shop that takes pride in its old-fashioned recipe and got its start by creating small batches of scrumptious fudge using just a copper kettle and a gas stove.
