Outdoor Spring Celebrations Around the Bay State

Daffodils, 60-degree weather and the mass exodus outdoors mean springtime in Massachusetts. The blistering cold and abundance of snow piles this past winter have given MA residents and visitors alike even more of a reason to celebrate this new season. Here are just a few of the ways to honor spring after a chilly winter.

Daffodil Festival ~ Nantucket, MA
April 24 – 26
Spring on Nantucket brings over 3 million daffodils of every hue, so for three decades, Nantucket residents have celebrated this flower with art shows, an antique car parade, a hat contest, a children’s parade and a tailgate picnic in Siansconet.

Birding at Fruitlands Museum ~ Harvard, MA
April 25, 7AM
Search for the great Blue-winged Warblers, Chipping Sparrows and Bluebirds on a guided birding walk two miles long. Pass through meadows and wooded glens for an exploration of some of Massachusetts’s most beautiful birds.

Sheep Day/Earth Day Celebration ~ Middleboro, MA
May 2, 10AM – 3PM
Sheep shearing, wool demonstrations (washing, weaving, spinning and felting), sheep dog demonstrations and crafts are just some of the activities offered at this celebration south of Boston. There will also be local crafters and eco-friendly exhibits for Earth Day.

Baby Animals on the Shaker Farm ~ Pittsfield, MA
Now through May 3,10AM – 4PM daily.
Give a warm welcome to new barnyard friends at the Round Stone Barn on Shaker Farm. Baby calves, chicks, ducks, goats, lambs and piglets will be exploring the farm for the first time. Stroll through the heirloom gardens, play in the hands-on Discovery Room and explore the historic buildings of Hancock Shaker Village. Kids 12 and under are admitted free.

Lilacs at the Arnold Arboretum ~ Cambridge, MA
May 10, 10AM – 3PM
Sit amongst the magnificent purple lilacs in the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. Choose from the many family activities on site like food trucks, a horticulture truck display, a design-your-own Mother’s Day card station, fragrance tests and more. Or just explore the many trails of the multicolored, fragrant lilacs.

Motif #1 Day ~ Rockport, MA
May 16, 10AM – 5PM
Motif #1 Day celebrates spring and the arts in Rockport. The celebration takes visitors around the famous red fishing shack, also known as Motif #1. This is one of the most painted and photographed buildings in America. The seaside village in the spring is particularly inspiring to the artists of the North Shore.
