New Orleans may be the Birthplace of Jazz, but Massachusetts is quickly becoming the State of Jazz!
With a combination of cool jazz clubs and concert venues, weekend jazz brunches, outdoor festivals, and dozens of jazz study programs from Boston to Amherst, Massachusetts guarantees a vibrant jazz scene throughout the year.
There’s so much jazz in the Bay State that the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism launched MassJazz in 2009 to provide up-to-date information on when and where to find live jazz any time of the year.
With all this jazz, how can you keep up? Start with a free copy of the 4th annual MassJazz Travel Guide, a 40-page magazine that’s available at visitor centers around the state, or at local hotels, nightclubs and college campuses. It’s a compendium of jazz events, plus key information like radio stations, jazz blogs, and organizations that celebrate all things jazz.
And for those of you who love outdoor festivals, August is a particularly busy month, with jazz festivals in Martha’s Vineyard, Lowell, Provincetown, Salem and Rockport, followed by festivals through the fall! Here’s a full list of jazz festivals in Massachusetts this summer and fall.
To find more about live jazz in Massachusetts year round, visit MassJazz.com and Massjazz.blogspot.com. You can also find MassJazz on Facebook & Twitter. For information about visiting Massachusetts any time of the year, head to MassVacation.com.
Michael Quinlin is founder and director of MassJazz, and publisher of the annual MassJazz Travel Guide. He sends out a daily blog on jazz events taking place in Massachusetts, focusing on both international artists coming to town, as well as great local acts playing in cities and towns across the Bay State.
